Course Description

Introduction to prosody and the formal elements of poetry, with a focus on structural principles, metrical and syntactical rhythm, sound and rhyme, stanzaic organization and the use of figurative language

Introduction to the basics of rhetoric and stylistics

Overview of literary periods and movements, major authors and poems, within the contexts of socio-political and economic situations between the 16th and 19th centuries

Close readings and in-depth study of selected poems representative of English poetry between the 16thcentury  and 19th centuries.
