Celo po svoji  priselitvi v Združene države Amerike leta 1935 je Isaac Bashevis Singer večino svojih del napisal v jidišu, zato so njegova angleška besedila večinoma prevodi. A ko je leta 1979 prejel Nobelovo nagrado za literaturo, je bil vendarle ameriški državljan in pisatelj. Kot novinar je delal za newyorški časopis, ki je izhajal v jidišu, najbolje pa je poznan po svojih približno dvajsetih romanih, ducatu zbirk kratkih zgodb in seriji del za mlade bralce. Velik del njegovega opusa opisuje življenje Judov, in sicer tako svet judovskega prebivalstva na Poljskem pred grozotami holokavsta kot tudi svet  Judov v Združenih državah Amerike. Kot sin rabina se je posvečal temam religije in okultnega in zmogel celo tragične teme ublažiti z veliko duhovitostjo, humorjem in modrostjo. Nezaupljiv do velikih idealov, ki so v dvajsetem  stoletju povzročili toliko groze, Singer (v kratki zgodbi »Job«) enemu svojih junakov  v  usta položi naslednje besede : »Naj izmečki upajo, naj se borijo za kruh, seks, prestiž, za domovino, komunizem in za vse druge –izme«. V drugi zgodbi v prevodu Nobelovca Saula Bellowa, »Gimpel the Fool« (»Norec Gimpel«), se pripoved začne preprosto, a modro: »Jaz sem norec Gimpel. Sam sebe nimam za norca. Prav nasprotno.
